HOLIDAYS (2016)

Boredom and Weird in one Package

Another Anthology movie that takes the Holidays and pits its it in the most boring horror movie way. They take seven holidays; Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Christmas and New Years and try to provide a creepy movie yet fail in doing so. There are some moments in the film that do provide a weird atmosphere but fall short in providing the horror element. I have skipped watching this one seeing other people comments on the movie but the reason I had to watch it was because of Seth Green and even with him in one of the shorts, it really didn’t make the movie any better. He did do a good job acting and he does have that funny portrayal that makes him well him.

holidays-movie-review-2016-christmas-seth-green

With out spoiling the movie, Valentines Day was just down right weird and about a girl on the swim team that look as weird as the character she portraits. Oh did I forget she has a crush on her swim coach? Yeah things only get weird from there. Nothing out of the ordinary or really for the horror genre either.

St. Patrick’s Day was probably the weirdest one out of the bunch. Following a school teacher and meeting a very peculiar student that doesn’t smile all while when she gets home is somewhat narrated by her mother via voicemail. After that there was something about a pregnancy and snakes?… yeah the snake thing was really weird. You would have to watch it yourself to find out. And what was up with the animal heads on human bodies?

Mothers Day was just boring but it wasn’t until Fathers day when it really got good. This single short was really good and the music set the atmosphere. It follows a woman who has thought her father was dead until one day she received a tape and tape deck. I really don’t want to spoil this short because it really hit the ball out of the park! If all else only watch this movie for this short.

jesus-easter-bunny-850x425

Easter way just another weird one with a bunny man/Jesus character and I really don’t know how to explain it but the character itself was just terrible to look at. You could clearly tell that the guy had a rubber mask on and the make up effects where terrible as well.

The rest of the film just completely bored me to death, enough for me not to want to talk about them anymore. I do love the Horror anthology film genre that is coming out and the ones that are already out aren’t to bad to watch. This movie however is just plain boring and uninteresting to watch . If you haven’t seen this movie yet only watch it for FATHER’S DAY, it was the best one out of them all.

VIRUS: The Game

….. …… …… ….. JUST TERRIBLE

Developer: DynoTech Software                                  Release Date: 1995

Virus: The Game is truly a terrible game in its own right. I found this abomination in the A Ton of Games Classic 1. Words can’t express how bad this game really is and it’s not because of just the name alone that was infecting, but the fact that the game itself is just down right boring among a few other terrible things…

Screenshot (2)

You play as Vinny the Virus and your job is to infect a hard drive and control all its sectors by capturing bytes. Sounds easy right? Sorry to say it’s not. Unfortunately it is marred by bad controls and the only controls is the keyboard. You move around the screen by pressing the Up, Down, Left and Right Keys and even that is difficult. Sometimes Vinny moves across the screen in no time at all but in others he seems not to want to move at all. When you hit the wall from zipping across the screen (and you will), it seems to take Vinny just a second to start moving to another direction that you are trying to go to. Most of my time playing was pressing the directional keys multiple times to go in a certain direction which can be draining on your hands.

Screenshot (2)

As for how to beat a level is really uncertain. You are told in the instructions that you need to take control of all the bytes in the level and of course their image is that of vampire teeth? To exit the level but I feel that there is still some bytes remaining in the level but I’m not certain and everything else is point based. The game tries its best to make you want to get all of the items in hopes to open the exit but that’s all false hope all you really need are bytes. And how do you know the exit is open? There is a small sound and the edge of your screen turns grey. Great job….. What about that pesky Red guy following you around? Well he is the Anti Virus that’s trying to destroy you and good luck getting away from him. He follows your every turn and the closer you get to the remaining bytes… well nothing it just gets hard to plan your move when you have something constantly following your every move. *Plan your moves carefully and quickly because each time you take a step you are cutting off your escape. If you step on
a blue square it then turns yellow. Stepping on a yellow square turns it red and stepping on a red square turns it into an empty spot and you can no longer step there. This can restrict your movements, just one of the many dilemmas you will face.

Screenshot (3)

The Sound is awful. Just awful and its constantly repeating the same track over and over. The sound effects are virtually none existent oppose to a few screeches here and there. The graphics are just as terrible and simple at the same time with the intro picture god awful and it almost reminds me of the monsters from Where the wild things book, weird yes.

Screenshot (4)

Final Thoughts-

Virus: The Game is just plain terrible and for the most part hard. Yeah I love a challenge and don’t shy away from one but the controls don’t work have the time. It seems like this is a game from the early flash game days. I really don’t mind the graphics too much and the music (the only track there is) grinds on my ears till they bleed and I recommend that you turn off your speakers when playing it. If you can get past the controls and the relenting Anti Virus that follows, maybe there is a slim chance that it could have been  decent.

Score: 3/10

Graphics:                   [3] If you can get past the ugly intro picture then you are in for an even uglier game. Basic is the name of the game but even that can be…OK…?

Sound:                        [1] The game’s only one track will grind on your ears till they bleed and even then you will forget about it after playing it.

Control:                     [3] How can you mess up keyboard controls? Especially if they are only directional?

Replayability:          [2] If you can get past the music and the tank like controls, then maybe you would have a decent game but unfortunately this is just a boring unplayable game.

My Arcade GO GAMER Portable

Portable Awfulness Score: 3.4/10

Release Date: 2017 Developer: dreamGEAR

Ah yes the portable Plug N Play, every kids dream come true. Unless your dreams are the stuff of complete lazyness and garbage. The My Arcade GO GAMER Portable is the worst kind there is, terrible games behind a sleek design. I have seen the MAGGP on multiple occasions going to the electronics department in Wal-Mart and it always caught my eye. I thought to myself another Plug N Play and even deeper in the mind “another terrible one at that” but that all changed when I just took a chance with it and at $19.97 is was one awful descion that I regret.

thumbnail

Graphics- 3

The Graphics are usually not the highlights of any Plug N Play but that doesn’t mean that they are terrible neither. One thing is that some of the games do have OK graphics but are blurred between the lines of 8-bit and 16-bit. Most games do have colorful graphics but the biggest problem is the FPS. Every game on the machine (all 220 games) are marred by slowdown. No game and I do mean no game is fast or even plays at a normal pace. Think of it this way say to yourself one mississippi slow and that is the speed of every game. NO WAY. You may be saying to yourself that the game art on the box makes them look cool. Well yes and they do look like that in the game but take my advise and stay away. Another problem with the device is the LCD screen can become negative in certain veiwing angles.

Sound- 3

Beside the bleeps and bloops of any Plug N Play they are completely normal but that is not saying much. Most games do have music and for the most part fit the theme of the game. Many Games have just one sound track and it constantly loops over and over. On the other hand some games just simply do not have music. Once you go into the mini-games as they call them, they just simply stopped making music for them and seemed to not care but as long as the first twenty games have music that should be enough for everyone or at least that’s probably what they thought and what is up with the main menu music?

Controls- 5

The Controls are your standard fare of arranged buttons from the D-pad to the A and B buttons. The D-pad feels weird and the A and B buttons protrudes outwards to much. No game is overly complicated in fact every game is very simple a four year old could pick the game up and start playing it. The only problem is the slowdown of the games themselves that make the controls somewhat hard to pull off. The mini-games are the easiest to control while the first twenty games are somewhat difficult to play especially MINI FIGHTER. Pulling moves off in that game is ridiculous and no game and I do mean no game comes with any instructions on how to play them. GOOD LUCK.

Replayabilty- 1

Right now you have either regretted your decision on your recent purchase and have either trashed it or have made a video on how to destroy it in the fires of Hell.

thumbnail3

Final Thoughts-

I really thought in the back of my mind that this way going to be a different Plug N Play and the fact that it was an impulse buy at Wal-Mart made it even worst. The Sleek Design, jet black color and red clear buttons really caught my eye. Although for $20 you could have found something a little bit better. I have had other dreamGEAR Plug N Plays before and none of them were this bad. I would hate to admit it but the “good games” are in the mini-games section. Another interesting thing that they had put into the device was the 3.5mm jack to AV cables, unfortunately they don’t give you any and hopes of putting this on your TV is out of the question. One thing is for sure, they sure do know how to rip Nintendo characters off and put them into their own games. My advise is to stay as far away from this as you possibly can. Don’t fall for it.

Deadbolt

Fear the Reaper Retro Style!

Released: 02/20/2018 Developer: Hopoo Games

DEADBOLT_20180223174428

You are the Reaper and have been assigned by Hell to take back souls and it doesn’t care how you do it. Interesting enough how you interact with hell is by sitting in a nice comfy red chair and the flames shoot out of the fireplace which in turns gives you your mission, Intel, and other advice but how you go about your mission is completely up to you.

Being as it may a retro game in the modern day the graphics are as dreadfully awesome as the dark tones and settings make the game feel. At the very start of the game it does give you the warning that the game itself contains INTENSE blood and gore with suicide to boot. The blood splatter effect is nice and enjoyable to watch and no death is ever the same. Fluid animations sprites fill the stage areas and the lighting effects can either help or hinder you during your missions.

The Sound quality is sometimes a hit or miss depending on which level you are on and the blaring music when entering the stages can come off as way to loud and even static. The effects of the music when outside of the building and then transitioning into them are a great effect. The Creatures that chat to each other have their own speech effect which is a nice touch.

PREVIEW_SCREENSHOT10_162284

The controls feel great, aiming is fluid and nothing is overly complicated. Although it does take a bit of time to get the hang of mastering the controls from switching weapons, crouching behind tables and couches, to aiming a hammer and gun at monsters on the run.

This game is going to challenge even the most seasoned gamer and it all depends on how you approach the levels themselves. Before the start of each mission, you are given details on everything and given hints on how to approach the situation but the game makes you go at any approach you want. Buying weapons at the docks from the ferryman cost souls and replaying levels you have already beaten doesn’t grant extra souls, forcing you to make a wise but blind choice on what weapons to pick and they do matter in certain situations. But be warned that ammo is scarce and sometimes more often then not, you will have little ammo to deal with the situation.

deadbolt-ps-vita-ps4-20171217-002

Final Thought-

This game is absolutely fun to play and the music although loud at times is all in the right spot. I love this game and it becomes very hard after the first couple of missions challenging me to approach from different angle and thinking before acting on the kill! One thing that I don’t like is picking a weapon from your car. Once a weapon is selceted from your car,and you start the mission (killing the first enemy) you can no longer go back and pick another weapon especially if all your ammo is depleted. Despite that, I would highly recommend playing this game if only for the nostalgic feel.

Score: 8/10

Graphics- [8] The graphics and colors fit the mood of the game and the gore effects are great.

Sound- [7] The music is very upbeat and sometimes calming in some areas. In others though, it static and blaring.

Controls-. [7.5] The controls feel tight and are responsive. You are going to have to master the manual aim.

Replayabilitly [8] You are going to have fun with this although it is very challenging, you have freedom to go about missions anyway you please.

Update

For all of you that have recently seen the re-uploads, I am putting them on the front page for all to see, so now worries, they will still be in their respected category in the top right corner. EX DOS Gaming, Consoles, ect.

Also I have made I new Category for GAME COLLECTIONS. It is still under construction but there is Info Pages built for them so come and check it out. Right now there are no games but there will be soon.

D.R.O.D.

Deadly Roaches Around Every Corner

Developer: Caravel Games/Webfoot Tech                            Release: 1996

images

D.R.O.D or Deadly Rooms Of Death if you will is a puzzle game developed by Webfoot Technologies and then acquired later on by the developer, Erik Hermansen of Caravel Games. You play as Beethro Budkin, an exterminator and the main protagonist of the game, is called by King Dugan, to eliminate all the roaches and vermin in the dungeon.

big_1

The Game itself is a tile based game in which you move one space so do the monsters that inhabit the area. To move to the next level, you need to kill all of the monsters. While playing this game I noticed that it takes more than just reflexes to conquer the game, you need logic as well. From hitting buttons to release the next wave of monsters (in certain orders) to getting through a certain gate.

DROD-AE_killing_Neather

The graphics are stale looking and the bright Magenta title screen of the original version does a terrible job of telling you of what you are getting into. The big ugly brute on the title screen looks like a man who has seen better days with a little too much meth on the side. Although I would recommend that anyone playing a game no matter how old, to find the instructions and read them. It gives essential story and background elements. The Monsters themselves look great but Beethro looks relative small compared to some monsters. The still images you get when “order now” comes around and in the instructions are gruesome yet interesting to see.

drod-crowd-1

The MIDI music is very up beat and I would say doesn’t fit the mood of the overall game but that being said, I do like the soundtrack which contains up to 50 mins of tracks. The sound effects are funny to hear from Beethro stabbing bug to him screaming for death is quite refreshing to hear. The only annoying part would be hitting walls and buttons can grind on the ears.

hqdefault

The controls are interesting to say the least. You can control Beethro with the mouse or keyboard. Either way, you are going to have a bad time. Going full blast with this game is going to end in failure and the only way to win, is to strategize every movement. To make Beethro move, you use the NUMPAD and to control his sword W and Q . The controls take time to master but ultimately are hard to play around with.

Final Thoughts-

This game could be fun but ultimately falls really short as I don’t have the patience to go through all 300 levels. Heck I could only do 4 until I started dying and puzzles were ridiculous hard. I’m not one for puzzles but this did catch my eye when I was a kid and tried it out. D.R.O.D has a big following and there have been plenty of remakes since the original came out. The game’s source code is now free and has allowed the big community that this game has, to create original levels for more challenges. I do want to stress here that this review is for the WEBFOOT TECHNOLOGIES ORIGINAL VERSION of D.R.O.D. not the remakes or revisions that have come out years later improving the overall game.

SCORE: 5/10

GRAPHICS:                   [4] The graphics are not at all good with the exception of the monsters and the title screen.

SOUND:                         [7]  The soundtrack doesn’t go with the game but that doesn’t mean that it’s not good. The upbeat electro music makes you want to go to a dance party.

CONTROLS:                 [5] The controls are hard to get use to simply put

REPLAYABLITY:         [7] The amount of puzzles is overwhelming and can challenge the best puzzler. If you like puzzles and brain teasers look no further but people wanting more action/adventure look elsewhere.

Alien Carnage Review (Re-upload)

?Alien Scum busting for a discount?

Developer: Interactive Binary/Subzero Software           Released: 1993

Alien Carnage is a DOS game that came to fruition through Apogee Software and 3D Realms. The goal of the game is to defeat the onslaught of aliens that are abducting humans and turning them into mindless zombies. One thing that confuses me more is the name…is it Alien Carnage or Halloween Harry?

index

Well whatever the name maybe, they are the exact same game just different names for it. As mentioned above, you are Harry, savior of the world and it is up to you to defeat the aliens and its overlords from abducting more humans and turning them into mindless zombies. As you begin you start with a pretty long intro video about what is going on and yeah it’s no 60 seconds either. It seemed like forever when the video plays but it is rich in story and you get to hear some pretty awesome yet cheesy one liners! Man, what is up with that helmet Harry is wearing?!

carnage_7

From there, you start platforming right at the get go but this is no fast paced game like it is made to believe. When walking around which is 60%, the other is Jet-packing everywhere else, you go at a pretty reasonable pace. Jet-packing on the other hand is very slow and you do have to refill your jet pack at charging stations. The weapons are a hit and miss, you have your standard fare Flamethrower which consumes the very fuel that is used for your jet pack (thank god there a ton of free fill stations) to the proton gun, missile gun and the mini nukes. Although some are better for certain situation, I would still recommend you use your flamethrower and save you special ammo and weapons for the bosses and harder enemies. Ammo is not dropped by enemies, instead it is money and it is counted by 5’s. Every weapon/ammo is purchased at terminals and terminals will show the corresponding weapon/ammo that it has for purchase. These are spread throughout the levels.

maxresdefault1

The levels themselves are split into FOUR MISSIONS that are then split into levels that are fairly small and may seem big at first but the big down fall is using the mini-map to locate the survivors. The only indication is by a white dot on your map and can become very frustrating on how to find them. I will say this the only way to complete a level and enter the elevator is by finding every single survivor on the map. For the graphics, they are as colorful as they can be but can hinder you in certain levels because textures can overlap on enemies making them hard to see especially smaller enemies. The intro videos that you have to watch before and after the MISSIONS are amazing and full of detail. The music is your standard MIDI music and sets the tone and everything has the appropriate sound effect so no problems here.

c09d1f67e88c4dea82434720ef16e38b

Final Thoughts-

On 3D Realms website they call Harry, Duke Nukem’s adopted brother and I can see the resemblance. I had fun with this game and although it can be frustrating at times looking for survivors, the rest of the game is in all the right places. I would recommend that if you can find this game it is worth a play through! If not that than for the cut scenes ALONE. You’re going to have fun with this one!

Scoring- 7.5

GRAPHICS            [8]   – Bright and vivid colors fill your screen and sets the SCI-FI tone but overlays can get in the way of enemies.

SOUND                  [7]    – The Music and sound effects are in all the right spots but nothing that truly stands out.

CONTROLS          [7]    – The controls are tight on Harry but when using the Jet pack you go as slow as walking in Syrup.

REPLAYABILITY [7]   – You will have fun with the game and watching the cut scenes are amazing but you are going to get frustrated real fast with finding survivors.

Delta Hydra Review

The Underrated 4X you’ve never heard of.

Developer: Webfoot Technologies                                                  Year: 1997

5198-2-delta-hydra

Delta Hydra is pretty much an unknown 4X sim that even to this day is the very foundation on which I started playing 4X games; Masters of Orion anyone? From the get go there is your basic plot line: Earth is destroyed by war and pollution and we take to the stars in order to find a new home. Luckly we find a solar system in the Delta Hydra system and it is inhabited by nine planets, all in which is for you to send out probes to do research, develop colonies and so forth. Oh, did I forget to mention that there are two other space agencies? The SEAM and AASA have launched their own colonist into space for the very same reason.

Delta Hydra is very simple to play and very plot driven. You can try going the peaceful route with the other agencies which not surprising they hate each other and if you are friends with both, they will likely find out and maybe declare war on you. With that being said you can declare total war on the faction if you like but be warned that is only if you are plenty stock piled for battle as the opponents usually out perform you. As for talking to the agencies, you can give gifts, exchange tech, declare war or offer a peace treaty. Which ever route you go, the recommendation is to always send pods for research to discover the new planets and developing new technology.

5198-7-delta-hydra

The Graphics for the time aren’t really all that great and are in full-blown early 3D and most of your time is going to be spent on the colony menu (see Below Image) checking on colonist, developing new habitats and greenhouses are essential to a happy life. One of the funniest things and probably the saddest are the representatives of the agencies; You control ULSA, The SEAM is controlled by a goofy looking European and of course the AASA which is the Asian agencies, is controlled by an even goofier looking Asian woman. The art work that accompanies the game is hilarious to look at and at times I can’t take them serious when they declare war on me, which by the way is all the time. (Maybe because I laugh at them?)

5198-5-delta-hydra

The sound quality is probably where the music really doesn’t shine to bright here. You do have music albeit in MIDI form and all the different planets and the main menu have decent atmospheric music but it’s not the best. For the most part you really won’t notice the music at all unless you’re on the Main menu. Don’t Expect too much here. Although the music isn’t the best it does have sound effects like any normal game would have right? YES it does, I can’t tell you the many times I have played DOS games and there was simply no music or effects at all. The effects from war to lasers to ion engines burning, were all in the right spots.

5198-8-delta-hydra

Combat is fairly simple and a little bit less challenging than other space 4X games but that doesn’t mean to take it easy as you can get your butt handed to you in an instant. It’s all done in a pseudo 3D map and you take control of any available ships that you might have and any weapons that have been developed at that time will be equipped on to your ships. Unfortunately if you lose your all your ships, you will lose the weapon and have to develop it again. The map features are smaller that the other games and the replayability is high as well due to the randomization of the map on every new game.

5198-4-delta-hydra

Final Thoughts-

I really love this game and it will always be remembered as an amazing game. Its simple features and game play make for a fun and interesting time, if only for 30 min. While the music is not the best, it does the job. If you can find this game, I would tell you to pick it up and try it out although the graphics may be a put off for more of the graphic heavy person in this day and age, it’s a shame that this game was left behind in the dust of time…
