Scoring System for Atari 2600-7800

You know I can’t really seem to score and Atari game with a number rating, it seems to harsh and for the matter hard. For an Atari game on a 2600, the controls are basic you have one button and a joystick. Some games require you to use the paddle controller otherwise, they are simply controls and really don’t need to be reviewed unless noted. Graphics for these games only start to get better (I mean upgrade) when we get to high end console such as the LYNX and JAGUAR.

What I am trying to say is here is a simple rating system for any and all Atari 2600-7800 games.

  1. BAD– This game is awful and should be thrown back into the dungeon where it came from.
  2. HMM– the game is neither good or bad its just there to exist
  3. OK– The game has some interesting quality to it
  4. GOOD– You leave beating this game with a sense of accomplishment but you know that you can’t really beat an Atari game or can you…
  5. GREAT– You can play this game over and over and feel good knowing that you have a great game on you hands.
  6. AMAZING– The best of the best video games belong here but is there an Atari game worth this score?

Now for any games above 7800 such as LYNX and JAGUAR, I will be using a Number scoring system.

Billy Mitchell “MASTER of DONKEY KONG” Stripped from HALL of FAME in Scandal

A Legend Wiped from Existence…

Billy Mitchell became a legend after he set the high score in DONKEY KONG and being featured in a full length documentary. Now he has been stripped of his title after a scandal hit the retro gaming community. Twin Galaxies reported that some of Mitchell’s records were not obtained on either Donkey Kong or Pac-Man but instead a MAME Emulator, which is a violation of Twin Galaxies rules.

One of the rules that Twin Galaxies has is that you must submit an original score using an original arcade board and Billy Mitchell has said that everything is valid but unfortunately a couple of days ago, GWR (Guinness World Record) sided with Twin Galaxies being their source of verification for all game related records. Not only does this mean that his Donkey Kong Score is wiped from existence but also his PAC-MAN Record will be wiped as well.

For of those who do not know of Billy Mitchell, He set one of the Highest scores in the world in 1999 or should I say a complete Perfect score in Pac-Man. He was also in the full documentary King of Kong: A Fist Full Of Kong were it followed Steve Wiebe’s attempt to beat Billy’s record in Donkey Kong.

What do you think? Do you think that Twin Galaxies is being Just or Unfair? Should Billy be wiped from the board forever? Let me know what you think!
